Fresno Area Express may temporarily ban passengers for violations committed

Fresno, CA (Jan. 29, 2010) – Fresno Area Express has new laws that contribute to the safety of passengers riding on the public transit system. Under the rules, FAX may take away riding privileges of passengers who act out or commit crimes while in a transit facility or riding one of the buses.
The new rules are the result of the passage of Senate Bill 1561 by the state legislature. It gives FAX the right to ban passengers from its vehicles and transit facilities, and in some cases to impose fines. These rules take effect Monday, Feb. 1. Anyone who has been arrested for a crime or cited three different times within a 60-day period for violations may have their riding privileges revoked for 30 days or more.
Violations include disturbing a transit vehicle operator or others on the bus or in a facility, and defacing transit property. Other infractions include assaulting a bus operator, public urination, spraying graffiti and loitering at bus stops.
“Perceived safety on FAX buses was the second most important factor impacting rider satisfaction in our most recent survey,” said Ken Hamm, director of transportation for the city of Fresno. “Thanks to the state legislature, these new rules provide us with a vital enforcement tool that will allow FAX to provide a safer driving experience for our customers.”
